WOW! what a week, eh? William and Kate got married at the Royal Wedding, Pope John Paul getting beatified, Osama Bin Laden was announced dead, and today is the Canadian Elections Day. And on a personal side, I have moved to a new apartment in Scarborough. So much going on this week and May has *just* started. Seems like it's gonna be an interesting month (especially because my birthday is the end of this month, of course).

Royal Wedding
Good for William and Kate. What a lucky girl she is. It amazes me that someone, a common person who has lived on a house on sme street in Englad, went to University like a normal person can get so lucky to catch Prince William's eyes. Not only that, but but made him feel like she's the one for him to spend the rest of his life with. What a lucky girl. But of course, everything comes with a price, and for her, her new role as the Duchess of Cambridge, brings a lot of responsibilities. Good luck to the couple! Hope they last a long time together. As a little girl, I always dreamed about marrying Prince William, like every other girl I know. But now that he's all fully grown, and seems like he's becoming bald and looking more like his father, I'm not upset I didn't marry him.



Osama Bin Laden
And Osama Bin Laden has been claimed to be dead. The funniest comments I have seen on Twitter and Facebook were:

- Hussein - √....Bin Laden - √.....Waldo- you are next!!! (which made me think about changing the last bit to 'Carmen Sandiego - pending' instead of Waldo and posted it on FB and Twitter)

-Who would've thought that Osama Bin Laden would turn out to be the world's Hide & Seek Player. Game over biiiicaaaatch!!

- Osama Bin Laden is now dead until Donal Trump sees his death certificate.

Glad he was finally found and killed. Like Obama said "justice has been done", for all the people who died in the 9/11 incident ten years ago. (wholy! ten years already!) I'm sure there is a big party in the US today. At this height, seems like Obama could be re-elected as president.



Canada Elections
Now on to Canadian elections. In one hand, I could care less about it because I can't vote and whoever wins the elections won't do much for immigrants like me. In the other hand, it's an event that shakes the whole country and I wanna be informed about it. Wish I knew about Canadian politics more, so I know what's going on and what kind of leader will make a better Canada. Jacob is a smart man and he's with Liberals, so I'm supporting Liberals too. Apparently Harper doesn't do much for Canada. The fact that he wanted to call Canada a 'Harper Government' kinds shows me that he's a very self-centered person and he could care less about Canadians in general. It's interesting that I did a test online to see which political leader thinks like me, and most of my beliefs (which leans more towards Liberals). Fair enough. If only there was a political party leader that makes it easier for immigrants to find jobs and stay in the country that'd be awesome. Who are YOU going to be voting for today?



Apartment
The new apartment I have moved to isn't the best. There are several reasons why I don't like it:

1) I don't like the location at all. First, it's so far away from downtown. I have to take buses to go to subway station. I definetly live in like the new Chinatown because there are lots of chinese people around, which makes me feel uncomfortable because I never liked living with so many asians because I'm not used to it (no offense to Chinese people, I am Chinese too, and so are my family). But I find lots of Chinese adults very sloppy, dirty, and don't care about anything. I don't know. They live simple lives and don't bother to make places smell nice, look nice or anything like that. Like they don't decorate houses, maintain a clean living space, and for some reason houses always smell like fish. That's my personal opinion through some observation, and it's very general. Don't mean to offend anybody. That is also kinda stereotypical. Might not be true on some Chinese people.

2) The basement is SUPER COLD too! The floor, when you step on it, it's like freezing! I have to wear socks or slippers at all times. I have my heater set to the highest and I rarely turn it off during the day. I have also turned my oven on and leave the oven door opened so the heat will go to the living room/kitchen.

3) Upstairs is so loud! Because the house is so old, and the floor is made of wood upstairs, I can hear everytime people walk over. The other day, when I first moved in, the people upstairs invited people over and all I could hear was people dragging furniture all over, heavy things falling all the time, and long and loud conversations as if some mafia people were arguing and fighting. Horrible! And happened late evening. I should buy some loud speakers and blast it on at night to some electronica music. Make a discohouse in my room. At 1am.

4) It's so far away from supermarkets and restaurants. Have to take a bus to everywhere. Unlike my other house where I could just walk to campus to use the bank or buy something to eat on campus. Maybe meet some friends on the way. Or if it's nice I could just sit by the fountain while I enjoy my lunch.

Other than that I enjoy a lot having a clean kitchen where I don't have to deal with dirty dishes in the sink that have been sitting there for two weeks, and my own fridge where people won't steal my food.

No, you cannot take her

Fear thee not! For I have come back from my grave.....Actually what I meant was that I am finally back on my blog after spending a whole month without internet. And when I finally got it back I've been surfing online like there's no tomorrow. I don't know how I did it, it has been the longest I have gone without Internet. It is crazy how dependable I am on technology and the virtual world. I mean, of course, I need it to talk to my parents, search and apply for jobs online and catch up with the world.

Anyways, there have been a few events that have caught my attention lately and I am increasingly concerned. There have been many attacks on women in and around campus these past couple weeks. One of them was about a lesbian woman who got assaulted by the washroom near a pub on campus because of her sexual orientation. Then there is a woman who was told to be driven back to her place when a man actually drove her to some other house near campus and raped her after she attempted to escape. And the most shocking of all, is a woman who was found dead after a struggle in her apartment in the Village. The death of a Chinese girl has disturbed especially the student community. The criminal offenses in and around campus have been very frequent, but with the death of the girl, seems like the situation is getting out of hands. My question is How many more crimes until the campus security does something to help prevent these type of crimes??

Sure, crimes happen everywhere and some are inevitable. But I blame on campus security. And perhaps maybe the overtrust of women in men. There seems to be thousands of parking enforcement cars in the daytime around the Village (of course, to see how much money they can get from students who can't afford parking permits). But once the sun sets, the streets become ghost haunted by the sounds of drunken party boys, laughs of drunken girls and the silence of predators. The campus security get paid to patroll around campus every night. Yet, when a girl requests some foot patrols or the GoSave van, the campus security officers look back at the girl as if she asked them to walk her to Halloweenville. The excuse from them is that the Village is not part of campus and that the houses are privately owned. So they are limited to walk students up to a certain point, the line where it draws the division between campus and the Village. But what they neglect to take into account is that the Village is being habited by students by around 90%. And with so many robberies, assaults, sexual assaults, and until recently a death, the Village has officially become the most dangerous place to live in Toronto for students.

But I also blame women for having an overtrust in men. Opening the door to someone at 1am and getting into a car with a stranger while you are alone are not the cleverest thing to do for a girl. We are taught since we are young not to trust strangers and we need to be alert especially in the hours of the night. I urge women to stand up on their feet, be alert, be prepared for an event like this, and always question strangers' interest. We women need to know that above all, we need to protect ourselves first. So taking a self defense class is important. We need to prove that we are not the weaker gender and we can be strong too.

I also blame idiotic men who have lost their minds and don't know a thing about respect and can't control their strenghts, emotions and hormones. Obviously they need to be taught a thing or two about being a respectful man. They should be severely punished by the law and emotionally.

UPDATE: York University has announced that they are going to increase campus security by sending undercovered officers and officers in bikes on campus and around the Village. I can't believe it takes a death of a girl to make York realize they needed to increase security especially in the Village.

Optimism is contagious

Wish we could all have the optimism of this little girl everyday. Seriously. The world would be better.

Wearing many hats

Maybe it's the Gemini in me, but the phase I had when I wanted to be everything has been coming back again. I mean, career-wise.

Back in 12th grade, just before University, my friend who happens to be the library lady at my school, used to ask me this question every week: So, do you know what are you studying at university? And every week, I would give her a different answer. Biology, Geography, Advertising, Education, Culinary Arts, Graphic Design, Marine Biology, Music, Photography, Theatre, ...list goes on. Never really knew what I wanted to do specifically, cuz I knew I wanted to do them all! Like seriously. I'm not like other kids who went through a list of programs and just said no to all of them, but instead I would say yes to all of them because they all sounded exciting (well, maybe except for law and physics)

After lots of thinking I have decided to study Communications. Well, actually I went to a University in CR to take Advertising. Just to get the feel of being in University. And THEN, I took Communications at York.

Now that I have a Communications degree, now what? I know about all the jobs I could have by taking Communications: Audio and Video Production, Publisher, Graphic Designer, Web Designer, Corporate Communications, Public Relations, Sales and Marketing, Copywriter, Art Director, Lobbyist, Technical Writer, New Media Designer, Media Manager, Media Analyst, Creative Director, Editor, News Reporter, Journalist, etc. Yeah, they all sound really really nice. But it makes me think what other things I am missing.

For example, I like to cook. That's a fact. I love food. I love reading books and magazines about food and cooking. I love enjoying real good food. That's a fact again. I would have really REALLY loved to go to Cooking School. Learning about preparation of food, the different ways of cooking something, the spices, the nutrition value of food, the different tastes, how one food can mingle so well with others, French Cuisine, Italian Cuisine, Japanese Cuisine, Latin American Cuisine, Indian Cuisine....they all sound Fantastic! I could just go on and on about food and cooking because it is something I am passionate about. Especially when it comes to bakery. I wanted to be a pastry chef. Making cupcakes, wedding cakes, birthday cakes, cookies, meringues, pies, and all the sweet things.

Another thing I am passionate about, animals. I have a great facination especially on marine animals, or animals that live in water. Shrimps, fish, lobsters, clams, sponges, sharks, whales, seahorses, oysters, squids, corals, etc. Not only I like eating seafood, but I have a great fascination about, for example, how jellyfish move, where they breathe, how they eat, etc. I feel like I could stare at a fishtank for hours, trying to figure out what the fish is doing. I've always been interested in Biology, especially in my last years of high school. I got to learn so much about how things in nature function. And mother nature is a great thing! I feel I could never stop learning about nature. And I also care about the environment and protection of animals.

But what it is like to work at something I have never given thought about? Like a crime scene investigator. It happens that I was just watching CSI, and it made me wish I had taken criminology. These investigators are so brilliant tracking down murderers, and I am quite impress of the technology available to them, for example to track DNA from a strand of hair. A strand of hair!! Well, obviously the show might not portray reality as much, but I'm pretty sure they have cool technology for their jobs! It seems like a great feeling being able to solve a mystery. There is so much wit, intelligence and attention to detail. I wanna be like that! Seems amazing to find the missing piece to the puzzle. So cool. It could also involve biology! DNA testing and such. Psychology. Try to understand how people think and their intentions on their actions.

Whereas I never had the chance to try on different hats (not literally, I've actually worn many funky hats), this guy has. Sean Aiken. After graduation, he didn't know what he wanted to do, so he planned to take any job that comes to him to find his true passion. He made a project called "One Week Job" where he would perform 52 jobs in 52 weeks in a trip around North America.
